This monograph offers a first inventory of Philippe Parreno's work since the end of the 1980s. It explores problematics such as memory, presence, real time, and narration, and covers his multiform production, from his early performances through to cinema ("Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait," with Douglas Gordon, 2006), and spectacle ("Il Tempo del Postino," with Hans Ulrich Obrist, 2007). Edited by Christine Macel with the assistance of Karen Marta, this book offers the first complete list of works and chronology, fully illustrated and accompanied by notices. It also includes critical and fictional texts by Maria Lind, Charles Arsène-Henry, Enrique Juncosa, and Simon Critchley as well as an interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist. Designed by M/M, the book is published with the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Kunsthalle Zürich, Zurich; the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; and the CCS, Bard College, New York

"To accompany this year's issue of Matador, La Fábrica presents a new, unique, large-format artist book, which on this occasion has been specially created by the multimedia artist Philippe Parreno, regarded as "the master of installation". Bestiario brings together 24 images comprising a collection of Parreno's fantastic creatures which nourish his otherworldly creative universe. A key artist of his generation, Parreno rose to prominence in the 1990's and is regarded as one of the most innovative and intriguing international artists. Talent, imagination, magic, technology, poetry and light are some his trademarks. He creates installations, films, music, drawings, sculptures, text pieces, performances and other works that span different media, while asking viewers to join him in a journey to a personal, imaginative and subtle universe, where the boundaries between tangible and imagined, real and apparent, objective and subjective, present and memory, become vague and blurred." --

At the beginning of the 1990s, the preoccupation with the conditions of exhibiting again became a focus of artistic practice. For Philippe Parreno, one of the key questions was how art could react to the cultural and social challenges of the information age. His main concern was the exhibition as a cultural format of presentation and as an artistic medium that, more than any other means of artistic creation, determines the framework for the artist's participation in public discourse. By applying the features, procedures, and terminology of film and other culturally dominant formats of information he explored and put up for discussion some of the essential factors of display: the way in which space and time are handled, the status and function of the exhibit, the roles and behavior of artist and audience. By reframing the notion of "exhibition" in this way he created scenarios that oscillated between different states, categories, and meanings, depending on how the people involved related to them. His artworks in exhibition format were thus also a critique of how mass media, art, and art institutions work to produce meaning and inform the behavior of their audiences. Exhibition: Galerie Ester Schipper, Berlin, Germany (11.09.2020 - during the Gallery Weekend).
